Thule Cargo Box
If you and your family frequently take road trips for camping, skiing, or other outdoor activities, you may have thought about getting a cargo box to mount on the roof of your vehicle. This helps to free up space inside the automobile, which could be nice if you have older children. No one wants to be packed into their car with luggage and gear all around. A Thule cargo box could be the perfect solution to your problem.
It is understood that large skis, snowboards, and tents are not likely to fit into the interior of your vehicle. This is especially true if you have at 4-5 adults or older children in the vehicle along with you. You also need to consider the amount of luggage everyone will have with them. Even if have a larger SUV, it is still going to be difficult for everyone to be comfortable for the ride and have enough room for all the gear you have to take along.
Having a Thule cargo box on the roof of your car can more than double the amount of storage space your vehicle has. Just to give you a general idea, the Thule Atlantis 2100 provides 21 cubic feet of additional room. This could easily fit several snowboards, pairs of skis, sets of golf clubs, one or more tents, several pieces of luggage, and whatever else you need on your travels.
When choosing the right cargo box for your vehicle, you need to think about the size of the roof you are working with. If you have a smaller SUV, you will obviously want to use a smaller box on the roof. The Thule Atlantis 1600 features 16 cubic feet of extra room, which may be plenty for people traveling in a smaller automobile. You do not want to purchase a Thule cargo box that is larger than the roof, as it will then be unsafe to use.
To use a cargo box with your vehicle, the roof must have a base rack in place. How to move or wheel around a cargo container? Jack? other options?
If you have a big cargo container, how can one position it without a forklift? I was told you can use a car jack or something, but unsure. has anyone done this themselves? car jack, dolly, or little cart with castor wheels? hmmm...
If it is on your property and you just need to move it to a different location, then it can be moved rather easily if the ground you are moving across is flat and solid - not sand. You will need several poles or fence posts to act as rollers for the container - the more you have the easier things will go. They can be the full width of your container or you can use two rows of poles on each side as long as they are the same diameter.
Once you have your poles, jack one end of the container up and place the poles under it -- Make sure container is supported to prevent it from falling. You will have to get poles under the whole container so you may have to work from both ends with the jack and poles.
After you have the poles under the container, it should be easy to roll around. As the container rolls off one pole place another in front to keep the container moving. Turning corners id tricky but can be done just make sure that as you turn that you keep the poles turning also.
Once in the location you want it, remove the poles in the same manner as you put them under the container.
This is the "old-school" way of moving structures. I was taught this by a man who used to move barns and silos in the same manner. Even if you have to buy the poles, I think it will be much cheaper than hiring someone to move it. Just make sure that you or anyone who helps you DOES NOT GET IN A HURRY. That is when accidents and injuries happen.
