Did you ever get in line at a store and forget your wallet/ purse?
You then feel like a fool, to ask if the cashier can cancel your order. I just did this at Walmart last night.. I forgot my wallet at home, and I felt funny leaving empty handed... Did this ever happen to you? How did you handle the embarrassment?
I had to do it at Starbucks once. I was a bit embarrassed, but was able to stop them before they started the drink and they were very friendly about it. I felt really awkward, especially since I'd really only gone to buy a drink for a friend. I'd kind of forgotten about it until you asked this question - it didn't really bother me horribly. I think it happens to everyone eventually.
The grocery store near my college actually had a policy for dealing with it. The store was (and still is) and amazing place. They cost a tiny bit more (not a lot more, though) than some places (about on par with Albertsons). The founding family is Christian and that reflects in a number of their policies (closed on Sunday, lots of charitable donations, hiring disabled people or elderly for jobs they can do, etc.). One interesting way that it was reflected is that if you go through the line and realize you don't have your wallet, they don't cancel your order. They give it to you and you are on your honor to pay for it the next time you come through. One of their people spoke to one of my business classes and they said that in doing that, they lose less per year than the cost of one full page ad in the paper and for every customer they do it for, they gain a customer for life. That's certainly better customer retention than any ad in the paper can buy. Plus, most people come back and pay their bill. I never tested this one out.
Oh! And I did it once at a bakery. I was trying to get breakfast for an apartment guest, and when I snuck out (trying not to wake him on the couch by the door), I forgot my purse! So they gave me the food and let me come back and pay later. I told them I was going out of town that afternoon and would rather just not buy the food because I was worried I wouldn't make it back to the bakery and the man running it told me I had an honest, sweet face and could pay on the other side of the WEEK when I got back. I made a point of dropping by before we left, though. After putting that much trust in me, I wanted to make sure I didn't forget!
So in the past four years, I've forgotten my wallet twice (both times at least in part because I was not driving - I'm paranoid about leaving without my wallet when I drive). Whenever it has happened with me, everyone around me was very gracious and kind. I think that really diminished my embarrassment. I was certainly upset with myself, but with everyone around me being so nice I found it easy to get past.
