The best quality leather is Full Grain, this is leather which has not been altered beyond hair removal. Full grain leather is the most genuine type of leather, as it retains all of the original texture and markings of the original hide. It is also tougher and more durable than other types of leather, and as it ages, it gains a beautiful sheen.
The most popular finishes being Oil Tanned: Leather that is tanned using oils to create a very soft, pliable finish and Vegetable Tanned hide tanning which utilizes materials from organic materials such as bark instead of the traditional chemicals. Vegetable tanned leather has greater body and firmness than traditionally-tanned leather.
Unlike other types of leather, full-grain leather uses the whole hide rather than layers of the hide. In contrast, top-grain leather, another very desirable product uses the top layers of the animal hide. Using the whole hide makes full-grain leather much thicker, and great for products that require a certain amount of durability. I have a tan full length leather coat that needs cleaning. I have been quoted £100 from the cleanders - doe nayone have any home remedies please.
You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner.
DO NOT use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones.
BABY WIPES are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather.
Saddle soap is too harsh to use on todays leathers
You should also follow this with a good water based leather protector which will act like a 'scotchgard' and inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time.
