The airport of Amsterdam is named Schiphol and has the airport code AMS. Schiphol is located about fifteen kilometres (about nine miles) south west from the city of Amsterdam.
It has the reputation to be one of the best international airports and is one of the most important entry points to Europe from overseas.
First is the ease of getting there. Schiphol Airport had been voted one of the finest in Europe and its high speed trains will whisk you the 14 km into the city centre every 15 minutes. Then there is the ease of getting around. Amsterdam has excellent tram and bus services, not to mention the canal cruises that take in all the cultural holiday hotspots as well as the beautiful byways. Above all Amsterdam city centre is physically small and relatively quiet, with many streets-traffic free and bicycles the transport of choice for most Amsterdammers.
A cheap flight to Amsterdam is the most popular option for travellers from the UK. Out of all the airlines, Easyjet is the biggest carrier. Londoners are spoilt for choice and can opt to take an Easyjet flight from either Gatwick, Standsted or Luton. After Easyjet, KLM (the Dutch national air carrier) is the next biggest carrier and operates flights from both Heathrow and City Airport. The latter though, is usually an expensive option and only used by business travellers.
Avoid going to Amsterdam in October or mid-March as you would have to face continuous rains. As for traveling around, you can easily rent a bike and roam around the place. Biking is the best mode to travel around the city as it enables you to see the real Amsterdam at its best. You can also taste the best of foods at Cafe de Jaren or other famous exotic eateries. Do not forget to taste the Dutch cuisine as it is renowned all around the world.

Which is the best choice between Amsterdam and Utrecht for a foreign student?
Well, the most important thing you should consider is the quality of education you will get. But that depends on the institution you will be studying at and the subjects you will be taking.
So, just in terms of cities...
Amsterdam is of course much funkier, cooler and worldly than Utrecht. It has much more cinemas, concerts, bars, events etc.
BUT: it also has a higher crime rate, a lot of tourists, problems with drugs and it is more expensive to live in, not to mention the big problems for students to find housing because of a big shortage of accommodation.
Utrecht on the other hand, is much more of a student-friendly city with a very much student-oriented night life, more cozy hang-out places and better housing/transportation.
Also, although I don't know where you are from, I think you are a foreigner and just getting to know the Netherlands, Utrecht is a bettter place since it is more laid-back and friendlier.
So, although I am from Amsterdam and love that city, I would vote Utrecht in this one... bear in mind that the two cities are only 30 minutes by train away from each other anyway.
