Honestly it's more of a money game. In most cases the more you spend the better the gun (within reason of course). Just do some research on the gun before purchasing it.
I'll tel you first off don't buy guns from eBay. They're basically cheap quality, low, bottom of the crap barrel guns. Granted some actual players do post up really good guns on eBay in hopes of making money from them, but the majority of the guns listed are really low quality.
CYMA is one of those up and down brands. You can buy 1 gun and have it work awesomely well, turn around and buy another that breaks apart in your hand during normal use. So be careful about those. Between me and the guys I play with, we've brought about 9 or 10 and it's 50/50. Either really good or really bad.
JG/Echo 1/E1 are typically good brands, but confuse a lot of players. JG and Echo 1 (E1) sell the exact same guns. What's the difference? Echo 1 does quality control on their guns and guarantees that you won't have a non-working or faulty gun; they'll make sure it shoots straight, switch out any non-working parts for working parts, and so on. JG will just send you the gun and hope for the best. Echo will cost a few bucks extra, but it's usually worth it in the end.
Classic Army (CA) are a favorite for a lot of players simple because they're a low cost company that makes strong guns. They had a few quality control issues a while back, but they're getting their act together. Just be careful what you say about Classic Army because there's quite a few people that practically swear by it. I've actually had a guy threaten to kill me after saying "CA is a decent brand, not my favorite but decent".
JP is the little brother of JG. They're guns feel awesome, but their performance can sometimes lack.
Regardless buying a gun in the end all depends on the amount of money you're willing to spend. Just like with a car. There's some good $10,000 cars and we can easily name off $50,000 cars that work better. So it's all about money. I personally prefer Echo 1 because it fits my price range (something under $175), and I haven't had any bad experiences with any of their guns.
