Your Goals Must Support Your Dream

I'm a great supporter for setting goals as a formal method of achieving ones objectives, but what do I mean by goals? Part of the problem is that many people have no idea how to write goals. Goals are not a "to do" list of things for the week or month. You can't work forward from your goals to achieve your dream.

First you need a dream. You need to be absolutely clear in your mind what you want out of life. Now that is a simple statement but more complex than it sounds. As unbelievable as it sounds many of us don't know exactly what we want out of life. Sure we want to go on holiday this year, see the Wembley final and those are all good. The point I want to make is that your goals need to be congruent with your dream. You start with the dream. Don't limit yourself; dream big.

Once you're clear on the dream you set your goals to achieve it. Any goal that does not support achieving your dream must be discarded. Focus on the objective. See it; feel it; smell it. Put pictures of it on your bedroom wall. Add it to your computer screensaver. Meditate on it.

Once you have written down your goals, visualise them. Read them daily. It's all part of reinforcing your subconscious as to what you're trying to achieve.
Once programmed your mind will work on the problem, run the millions of permutations until it finds the solution.

Ever woken up in the middle of the night with a bright idea? It's called a "Eureka" moment. You subconscious is unfortunately not very considerate as to time. When it solves the problem it will let you will know, whatever time it is; no matter what you're doing. Be prepared for the "eureka" moment. You need to recognise the opportunity when it arises and be ready to cease it. The window of opportunity often closes after a while, so be prepared.

The first woman to swim the English Channel, Florence Chadwick, failed on her first attempt as a dense fog enveloped the channel. On her second attempt she visualised the destination, memorised every feature and succeeded. She later remarked

"I am not offering any excuses, but I think I could have made it the first time if I had been able to see my goal."
