Why doesn't Ryan Howard get the credit?
Why, when Ryan Howard has put up Babe Ruth type numbers the first four years of his career doesn't quite get the national recognition? He's the quickest player in baseball history to 100, and 200 homeruns, is perhaps the best clutch hitter in the game, and is relatively a drama-free guy? Do people really hate Philadelphia sports THAT much?
Or do people really harp on the strikeouts? Which when the guy averages close to 50 HRs and 140 RBIs a year, are relatively meaningless. Not to mention, he's vastly improved his glove at 1B, and hits for a usual power hitters average of .260 or so..
People don't seem to give Ryan credit. He really is a big time player in baseball. Arguably better in the postseason than Albert is. The Strikouts hurt him big time, but every big hitter today strikes out tons more than the old timers. As a Met fan I witness Ryan Howard's clutch play more often than not. I think Ryan is a mirror of how the people feel about the Phillies in general. They have more heart than any team in baseball. They find ways to win and along with the Yankees of the 90's and the Red Sox of the last 5 years are the best team that baseball has seen in a long while and no one wants to give them credit. They steamrolled through the playoffs last year. They win games they have no right to win. They are gutty and perhaps can be only the second team to repeat in the last 30 years. I actually find myself cheering for them which should go against all my Met fan logic, but you have to respect the Phillies. It is not just a collection of high paid talent like the Yankees and Red Sox are. Ryan is just a member of the most underated champion in a long time.
